History
Peter Josef Peters was granted permission to brew beer in Monheim in 1847. In 1876 the brewery moved to a newly built brewery on the outskirts of Monheim because the old brewery was too small. By 2000, the family was brewing 6 other beers in addition to Peters Kölsch. Their beer was brewed in the parent company “Peters & Bambeck Privatbrauerei” until 2004, when it was sold to “Brau und Brunnen”. Since the sale, Peters Kölsch has been brewed under contract at the Gilden brewery in Mülheim.
Peters Brauhaus has been located on Altermarkt since 1994 and is a very popular restaurant in Cologne’s old town.
The annual production of Peters Kölsch is 20,000 hectoliters, it is served in various bars and breweries in and around Cologne and sold in 0.33 l swing-top bottles as well as in “Littermännchen” (1 liter bottles).
Fun fact: Since Monheim was incorporated into Düsseldorf in 1975 (and successfully sued its way out again), Peters Kölsch was brewed in Düsseldorf for 1.5 years.
